Women's NCAA I Volleyball is a headcount sport so there is a  limit of 12 players per school that can  be under scholarship annually.  All other NCAA Volleyball programs are equivalency sports for scholarship purposes, so partial awards can  be awarded to meet the annual limit.  For example, an NCAA Division II school can award 16 female players each a 1/2 scholarship and still meet the  limit of 8 per team.
Men's volleyball is an emerging sport of the NAIA.  See our page on scholarship limits for more information.

* Average Athletic Scholarship is the average amount of athletically related student aid per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the specific school. Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this.

% receiving school FA
reported in the tables below is the percentage of ALL undergrads (athletes & non-athletes) who received financial assistance directly from the school. Avr School FA is the average amount of the award received by those students who received financial assistance directly from the school.

SAT & ACT percentiles: The tables below report the mid-range for SAT Math and ACT composite scores of the school's entering students: 50% of incoming students scored within the range reported, 25% scored at or below the low end of the range (25th percentile) and 25% scored at or above the high end of the range (75th percentile).

Weekly Time Commitment for NCAA Volleyball Players:
  Athletic Academic Total Hours
Average Weekly Hours (In-Season)  Hours Hours per Week
NCAA I   Volleyball 35 37 72
NCAA II  Volleyball 34 42 76
NCAA III  Volleyball 29 44 73
Average 33 41 74
If you want to play college Volleyball  expect the in-season athletic commitment to require nearly as much time as the academic work load - basically 2 full-time jobs!  And contrary to popular belief, Division III Volleyball requires virtually the same commitment of in-season weekly hours as Division I.   However off-season and other time commitments are greater for most Division I and II programs, resulting in a greater overall time commitment than with Division III programs.   Developing efficient time management skills in high school is key to becoming  a successful college student-athlete.  Source: NCAA Goals Study

Scholarship Averages for NCAA I Volleyball teams:
Women's NCAA I Volleyball Teams: Average Low  High
Scholarships Awarded per team 13 11 16
Average Scholarship per team  $      31,138  $        12,837  $       63,281
These are the results of our  survey of NCAA I schools that sponsored varsity Volleyball teams during their 2016 fiscal years. (Sorry, not enough data to report on men's teams). Number of athletic scholarships awarded is per team, so for 4 year schools typically only 25% or so will be available for incoming players.

Do you have the skills to play College Volleyball?

What level of player are coaches looking for and who are you competing with for a roster spot? A good way to get an idea is to look at the high-school bios of players currently on the roster of schools that interest you. Are the players All-League, All-State or All-American? Our tables below have links to all 1,809 US College Volleyball  team sites ... click on individual schools & see how you might compare to players on current team rosters.

The reason I had my kid start a college recruiting profile.

2018 Profile Summary:

CASEY O'ROURKE
Class of 2022
Saint *** School
Washington, DC

GPA: 3.3 / 4.0

Height: 6'3"
Weight: 170
Age: 15

Position: Point Guard

Points / Game: 19
Free Throw %: 78
Field Goal %: 47

2018 I had my son Casey start a recruiting profile in 9th grade to help motivate him to get better grades.

He's like thousands of 15 year old basketball players around the county: loves to play the game, plays on multiple teams and already has his eyes set on possibly playing in college. But like many kids his age he'll intently work on developing skills in a sport, but focusing on class work is well ... another matter.

When Casey began 9th grade he set up a free profile with NCSA. He loves entering his game stats, videos and other athletic information, but it also became immediately clear to him that his grade point average will be just as major of a factor in his prospects of playing college basketball as his points per game average.

I don't know if my son will actually end up playing in college. He might lose interest in the sport, get injured or simply not have the skill set to play at the collegiate level.  But if part of his high school experience includes a focus on achieving good grades in the hopes of maybe playing at the college level, then maintaining a recruiting profile is a valuable tool at this stage of his schooling.

Whether you are an 8th grade Volleyball player or a 10th grade swimmer, starting a recruiting profile is an easy, free & effective way to help you focus on what college coaches are looking for in a student athlete. Full disclosure: NCSA is one of our site sponsors, there are several other reputable sites that also offer recruiting profiles free of cost. The ideal time to create a college recruiting profile is when the student athlete is in 8th, 9th or 10th grade.
