 (1) Varsity Rosters may include junior varsity, redshirt and reserve and do not reflect club or intramural team participants.

**  Women's NCAA I Volleyball is a headcount sport so there is a  limit of 12 players per school that can typically be under scholarship annually.  All other NCAA Volleyball programs are equivalency sports for scholarship purposes, so partial awards can  be awarded to meet the annual limit.  For example, an NCAA Division II school can award 16 female volleyball players each a 1/2 scholarship and still meet the  limit of 8 per team.   Men's volleyball is an emerging sport of the NAIA.  See our page on scholarship limits for more information.

(
2) Average Athletic Scholarship is the average amount of athletically related student aid per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the specific school. Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this.

New Data!  2016 Athletic Scholarship Averages for NCAA I Volleyball teams
The following are the results of our 2016 survey of NCAA I schools that sponsored varsity Volleyball teams during their 2015-16 fiscal years. The results reflect the average number of athletic scholarships and average award per team, as well as the low and high range for the number and average dollar amount of scholarships awarded per team:2016 NCAA baseball

Women's NCAA I Volleyball Teams: Average Low  High
Scholarships Awarded per team 13 11 16
Average Scholarship per team  $      31,138  $        12,837  $       63,281
Sorry, not enough data to report on men's teams. The number of scholarships awarded is per team, so for 4 year schools typically only 25% or so will be available for the incoming (i.e. freshmen) class. Teams that do not award athletic scholarships  are not included in these results.

Coach's Corner New Feature!
We asked a few coaches from around the country to provide some brief input for high school and middle school athletes hoping to compete in College Volleyball. We've highlighted some thoughts we believe are particularly helpful:

Laurie Lokash, Slippery Rock University (NCAA II)

I think many people are surprised by the fact that only 6% of the current Club/HS population goes on to play collegiate volleyball.  I think many families believe that playing club volleyball is an automatic ticket to playing at the next level.  Talent and work ethic are better indicators of success at the next level than the reputation of the club or coach.

Don't cast too wide of a net to find schools and playing opportunities instead of finding the schools that meet your criteria such as academic major, cost, location, size of school, etc.  Take time to understand the differences between Divisions I, II and III; there are quality and sub-quality programs at each level.

Do your homework with regard to schools and programs BEFORE sending out emails.  I don’t appreciate athletes who express an interest in our school only to have to send a return email indicating we don’t have your major.  Send CURRENT video via the internet so a coach can evaluate your potential.  Have the student athlete speak for herself instead of having a parent act as an “agent”.  Be the communicator.  You contact the coach and you represent yourself.  As much as they like think they are objective, I’ve never met an objective parent when the subject was his or her child.

Ken Murczek, University of Charleston (NCAA II)

Be realistic with your college search. Many athletes want to play in a power 5 conference because they see these teams on television. These schools typically do their recruiting very early (freshman/sophomore year).  Make sure the school is a good fit for you and you are not going there just  because the name has some status.

When you are researching colleges make sure you are going there to get an education first and for volleyball second. For example, if you were to get injured would you stay at that school and earn a degree?

Set goals of what  you want to accomplish for each season. For instance, if you've  been told you need to overhand serve in order to make the 7th grade team next season, seek out a coach or study up on how to improve your serve from underhand to overhand. Make sure you know WHY you are playing. e.g.  Because it’s fun. I like the workout. I like to interact with my friends. Parents are making me ... Knowing your "why" is important.

** Steps to College: A Quick Overview of the Recruiting Timeline **
Senior year HS

* Narrow your list to 3 to 5 schools, stay in contact with coaches on a weekly basis, ask for the timeline  they will make offers.

 * Quickly let coaches know if you're no longer interested .

* Contact players on your short list of schools, get their direct feedback on the school and program.

 * Take official visits to schools on your short list, meet coaches and players.

* Complete FAFSA form, get college applications in early and apply to all schools on your short list.

* Keep your grades up - avoid Senior Slump!

* Character is key, make good choices every day. Who are you when no one is looking?

*
Post nothing on Social Media you may later regret. Don't let a 100 character tweet cost you a $100,000 scholarship!

 * Receive,  consider and respond to all written offers from schools.

* Make the decision - make sure it's your decision!

Junior year HS

* Continue to research schools but  narrow your list to 10 to 15 schools.

* Keep in contact with coaches often , let them know of your continued interest and also if you're no longer interested.

* Continue to send videos & grades  to schools you are interested in.  Be your own advocate & keep your name out there!

* Ask coaches where you stand on their recruiting list and their timeline.

* Take SAT/ACT Tests.

* Look to attend Showcase games and tournaments and let coaches know  your schedule.

* Continue to play at the highest level of club/HS team you can. Get feedback on where you can improve skills.

* Make unofficial visits to schools you're interested in.

* Take AP courses, challenge yourself academically!

Sophomore year HS

* Register with NCAA & NAIA eligibility Centers, complete  recruiting questionnaires for all schools on your list.

*
Begin compiling highlight & game videos, consider setting up a channel within YouTube

 * Continue to research and update  your list and write coaches & schools. Send videos and/or links to videos.

* Consider working with a speech coach to develop and improve communications skills - make a good first impression when you  talk to coaches

* Begin making phone calls to coaches, let them know your game / meet / match schedule  - stay on their  radars!

 * Take SAT / ACT practice tests and/or test prep courses, keep your grades up.

* Pick a good attitude and show it. Recognize that nothing is owed to you just because you're a good athlete

Freshman year HS

* Continue your research  & compile an initial  list of 20 to 30 schools  you're interested in.  Rank schools based on the attributes that are most important to you.

*Begin writing coaches of schools you're interested in, get on their radar and get your name out there!

 * Play at the highest level of club/HS team you can. Ask your coaches where  you need improvement and set goals.

* Look for College camps and clinics to attend.

* Good grades are critical ALL 4 years of HS - hit the ground running freshman year!

 * Consider working with a personal trainer to improve speed, strength and overall athleticism.

8th Grade

 * Research & start a list of colleges you're interested in.  Aim to begin writing college coaches  freshman year of HS.

* Work on study and time   management skills,  important to get good grades beginning  Freshman year of HS.

* Character matters, make good choices … every day. Learn to be very careful of what you put on social media

 * Play at the highest level of club team you can.  Ask your coach what you need to do athletically to compete well at the HS level.

This is a quick overview of the recruiting timeline. Timetables may differ somewhat by sport, division, school and gender,  but this provides a basic idea of the process. There are some constants that apply to all athletes in all sports: Start the process early,  thoroughly research your schools, take care of your grades,  advocate for but be honest about yourself, be proactive and be responsive. For more information see our page on recruiting process do's and don'ts.

If you can answer "yes" to these 3 questions, there is a roster spot out there for you:

1.  Will I be a positive representative of the team, program and school?  ... Good Character
2.  Will I be a positive addition to the roster and make the team better? ... Athletic Skill
3.  Will I be able to succeed both athletically and academically at this school? ... Solid Academics
