**
NCAA scholarship limits per school apply to Track & field and cross country  athletes combined.  Track & field and Cross Country  are equivalency sports for scholarship purposes, so partial awards can  be awarded to meet the NCAA limit per school.  For example, an NCAA Division II school can award 36 female track & field (including cross country  athletes) each an equivalent 1/2 scholarship and still meet the division limit of 18. See our page on scholarship limits for more information.

(2) Average Athletic Scholarship is the average amount of athletically related student aid per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the specific school. Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this.

New Data!  2016 Athletic Scholarship Averages for NCAA Division I Track & Field Teams
The following are the results of our 2016 survey of NCAA I schools that sponsored varsity track & field teams during their 2015-16 fiscal years. Results reflect the average number of athletic scholarships and the average award per team, as well as the low and high range for the number and average dollar amount of scholarships awarded per team. Results are for varsity Track & Field and Cross Country teams combined:
2016 NCAA swimming
Men's NCAA I Cross Country and T & F Teams Average Low  High
# of Scholarships Awarded per team 29 9 59
Average Athletic Scholarship per team  $       11,260  $        2,957  $        24,059
Women's NCAA I Cross Country and T & F  Teams Average Low  High
# of Scholarships Awarded per team 32 16 61
Average Athletic Scholarship per team  $      14,574  $       2,938  $       26,308

Scholarships awarded is per team, so for 4 year schools typically only 25% or so will be available for the incoming (i.e. freshmen) class. Data includes responding schools only, virtually all data is from public universities. Programs that do not award athletic scholarships are not included in these results.

Coach's Corner New Feature!
We asked a few coaches from around the country if they would be willing to provide some brief  input for high school and middle school athletes hoping to compete in College. We've highlighted some thoughts we believe are particularly helpful:

Bob Braman, Florida State University (NCAA I)

It's very important for high school athletes to understand that our sport is very objective and that times, distances, etc. can be measured against other athletes all over the world.  The reality is major college programs like ours will not recruit athletes with “untapped potential”.  We want the best of the best and then we’ll separate them based on coaching , competition, etc.

Always look on the universities’ athletic webpage and see if they list scholarship standards.  Even if they don’t be sure to only contact those that fit your talents. Always send a personalized e-mail to either the head coach or event coach.  In the e-mail you should include best performances / marks and SAT/ACT/GPA information.

Biggest misconception is that we’re like Football.  Track and Field is limited to 12.6 scholarships for men and 18 scholarships for women.  With 19 events plus cross country to cover that means that full scholarships are extremely rare

Brendan Rickert, Fairfield University (NCAA I)

Know the school you're applying to - don't write a generic email to every coach. Look at the times and/or performances of athletes currently on the roster to see how you compare. If you're way off, chances are you will not be on the team.

Don't use a recruiting service - times and performances don't lie so we do not need to see a video of you running. Do not give us times that cannot be found on a legitimate website, we will assume they are wrong.
 Fairfield University

Update 1-2 times per week. There's dozens of you and only a couple coaches, so the more you update the more you're on our radar. Prepare and ask questions- we want you to make the best decision for you. Let the coach know if you're no longer interested in the school.
   Fairfield University

Enjoy the process, it's a whirlwind but if you do it right, you'll have some amazing experiences that you'll remember for the rest of your life.

Henry Morales, Newbury College (NCAA III)

When applying to schools have an open mind set & keep these things in mind: Apply to a couple of your dream schools.  Make sure you're going to school for the major you want to pursue not for the track program. Look at schools across the divisions I, II, III. Make sure you go to a school with a mentality of finishing within four years. Seek out academic scholarships where you can.

Freshman year of High School: Grades should be a priority for all student athletes * Join the high school track team or a local Track club * Take on some summer time training and track meets.   eshman year

This is a quick overview of the recruiting timeline. Timetables may differ somewhat by sport, division, school and gender, but this provides a basic idea of the process. There are some constants that apply to all athletes in all sports: Start the process early,  thoroughly research your schools, take care of your grades,  advocate for but be honest about yourself, be proactive and be responsive.  For more information see our page on recruiting process do's and don'ts.

If you can answer "yes" to these 3 questions, there is a roster spot out there for you:

1.  Will I be a positive representative of the team, program and school?  ... Good Character
2.  Will I be a positive addition to the roster and make the team better? ... Athletic Skill
3.  Will I be able to succeed both athletically and academically at this school? ... Solid Academics
