Swimming is an equivalency sport for NCAA limits, so partial scholarships can be awarded as long as the combined equivalent awards do not exceed the limit. For example, an NCAA I school can award 21 women swimmers each a 2/3 equivalent scholarship and still meet the limit of 14 per team.  For more information see our page on scholarship limits.

Do the Math!   NCAA Division I men's teams have an average roster of 28 swimmers but a limit of 9.9 scholarships to award per team. This means the average award covers only about 1/3 of annual college costs, and this assumes swimming is a fully funded sport at the specific school.

*Average Athletic Scholarship is the average award per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the specific school. Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this.

% receiving school FA reported in the tables below is the percentage of ALL undergrads (athletes & non-athletes) who received financial assistance directly from the school. Avr School FA is the average amount of the award received by those students who received financial assistance directly from the school.

SAT & ACT percentiles: The tables below report the mid-range for SAT Math and ACT composite scores of the school's entering students: 50% of incoming students scored within the range reported, 25% scored at or below the low end of the range (25th percentile) and 25% scored at or above the high end of the range (75th percentile).

Weekly Time Commitment for NCAA Swimmers:
  Athletic  Academic Total Hours
Average weekly hours (In-Season) Hours Hours per Week
NCAA I 30 38 68
NCAA II 29 40 69
NCAA III 27 43 70
Average 29 40 69

If you want to swim in college expect the athletic commitment to require nearly as much time as the academic work load - basically 2 full-time jobs!  And contrary to popular belief, Division III swimming requires virtually the same commitment of weekly hours as Division I.  Developing efficient time management skills in high school is key to becoming  a successful college student-athlete.

The reason I had my kid start a college recruiting profile.

2018 Profile Summary:

CASEY O'ROURKE
Class of 2022
Saint *** School
Washington, DC

GPA: 3.3 / 4.0

Height: 6'3"
Weight: 170
Age: 15

Position: Point Guard

Points / Game: 19
Free Throw %: 78
Field Goal %: 47

2018 I had my son Casey start a recruiting profile in 9th grade to help motivate him to get better grades.

He's like thousands of 15 year old basketball players around the county: loves to play the game, plays on multiple teams and already has his eyes on possibly playing in college. But like many kids his age he'll intently work on developing skills in a sport, but focusing on class work is well ... another matter.

When Casey began 9th grade he started a free profile with NCSA. He loves entering his game stats, videos and other athletic information, but it also became immediately clear to him that his grade point average will be just as major of a factor in his prospects of playing college basketball as his points per game average.

I don't know if my son will actually end up playing in college. He might lose interest in the sport, get injured or simply not have the skill set to play at the collegiate level.  But if part of his high school experience includes a focus on achieving good grades in the hopes of maybe playing in college, then maintaining a recruiting profile is a valuable tool at this stage of his schooling.

Whether you are an 9th basketball player or a 10th grade swimmer, starting a recruiting profile is an easy, free & effective way to help you focus on what college coaches are looking for in a student athlete. Full disclosure: NCSA is one of our site sponsors, there are several other reputable sites that also offer recruiting profiles free of cost. The ideal time to create a college recruiting profile is when a student athlete is in 8th, 9th or 10th grade.
