*Do the Math!   NCAA Division I men's teams have an average roster of 29 swimmers but a limit of 9.9 scholarships to award per team. This means the average award covers only about 1/3 of annual college costs, and this assumes swimming is a fully funded sport at the specific school. Swimming is an equivalency sport for NCAA limits, so partial scholarships can be awarded as long as the combined equivalent awards do not exceed the limit. For example, an NCAA I school can award 21 women swimmers each a 2/3 equivalent scholarship and still meet the limit of 14 per team.  For more information see our page on scholarship limits.

(
2) Average Athletic Scholarship is the average award per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the specific school. Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this.

New Data!  2016 Athletic Scholarship Averages for NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Teams

The following are the results of our 2016 survey of NCAA I schools that sponsored varsity swimming & diving teams during their 2015-16 fiscal years. The results reflect the average number of athletic scholarships and the average dollar amount awarded by responding  schools, as well as the low and high range for the number and average dollar amount of scholarships awarded per team:
2016 NCAA swimming
Men's NCAA I Swimming & Diving Teams Average Low  High
Number of Scholarships per team 22 12 36
Average Scholarship per team  $      16,695  $        3,112  $        28,651
Women's NCAA I Swimming & Diving  Teams Average Low  High
Number of Scholarships per team 25 8 35
Average Scholarship per team  $      18,794  $       4,552  $       34,850

Number of scholarships awarded is per team, so for 4 year schools typically only 25% or so will be available for the incoming student athletes. Data includes responding schools only, programs that do not award athletic scholarships (Ivy League, etc.) are not included in these results.

Coach's Corner New Feature!

We asked a few coaches from around the country to provide some brief input for high school and middle school swimmers hoping to compete in College. We've highlighted some thoughts we believe are particularly helpful:

Rick Walker, Southern Illinois University (NCAA I)

Recruits get my attention when they pursue us as much as they want us to pursue them.  If I have to do all the work and constantly show or state our high interest, I can only assume that I will have to do that each and every day once they arrive in our program.  Two words: “Not Interested”.

Don’t think for a second that programs are not reviewing your social media, including the amount of time you spend on it.

Do your research before you go on a visit.  Don't get on campus, go through the process and then say the school's too far away from home. Don't waste the coaching staff's time and the school's money if you're not seriously interested.  Know your priorities before you visit a potential school. We've had recruits decide to not go with us for reasons ranging from us not  taking them out to parties (we have a no alcohol recruiting policy ) to our local shopping mall not being big enough. If these are your priorities then you may not be willing to invest the time needed to excel at school and swimming.

Always keep an eye on what is happening during a recruiting visit.  Remember, you get what you ask for.  If a program has no academic meetings set up and there are nothing but parties to attend, you will be joining a program with talented partiers.  If a program is showing you every facet of what they are about while school is in session - but does not include alcohol - then you probably are looking at a program that offers more, and expects more from you than simply coming there to swim and party.

Know what you ultimate goal is.  If it's just about the swimming, make sure you are looking for the right coach.  If it's just about the academics, make sure you find the right coach.  If it's about both, make sure you find the right coach.  The coach’s history within a program is usually very clear as to their priorities if you look hard enough.  Don’t pigeon hole yourself by shooting too high,  it will turn other schools off and if you find out that the higher programs don’t show you the same interest, you may have  turned away many of the programs that would have been a perfect fit for you.

Erin Hurley, Grinnell College (NCAA III)

Even if you are not recruited by schools, there are more places than you might be aware of to swim in college.  Reach out to college coaches well before your senior year and do so more than once.  Send your times and academic stats (GPA; class rank; classes you are taking and ACT/SAT).  This will help the coach determine where you might fit in athletically and academically at their school. Ask your high school and/or club coach to contact us on your behalf as well.

While we want parent involvement we  really want to hear from your son or daughter  during the recruiting  process. Let us know even if you’re making an unofficial visit to campus, we like to know you are coming to visit, even if you are visiting over the summer or at a time when the coach is not present.

Many schools super score  so don’t just take the ACT or SAT once.  If you don’t test your junior year, schedule so you have at least two opportunities to test before application deadlines. If you test your junior year, it can only help you to retake it your senior year. Be sure to take challenging classes, especially in junior and senior year,  Colleges/Universities want to see you challenging yourself in all four years of high school.

Always
let coaches know if you're no longer interested in their institution. Coaches hear far more often than you'd imagine that recruits are not applying or enrolling at our schools.
It doesn’t have to be a phone call, but letting us know you have moved on is helpful to everyone.   Don’t hesitate,  while we might not like what you have to tell us  we know it's your decision.  In the big picture, this is just one part of the recruiting process.

Brian O'Neill, Hiram College (NCAA III)

The most common misconception I see is either "I'm not good enough" or "My Child's not good enough" to swim or dive in college. If you have the passion to compete  there is a program out there for you somewhere. But you need to do your research, get your name out there and be proactive - an athlete will be his or her own best advocate.

Talent may get your foot in the door, but character gets you through it.

The biggest mistake I see is athletes and families who wait too long before looking at potential colleges - start looking early! In your freshman year of high school begin creating a list of schools of where you'd like to go and begin reaching out to coaches by the end of your Sophomore year - get on their radar! This is also a great opportunity for kids to learn how to speak to adults, return phone calls and texts, check and respond to e-mails. Kids will be their own best advocate with coaches but they must get their parents involved at each step, it's a team effort. But also remember who the athlete is - don't be a helicopter parent - coach's talk!

Use your high school years to become as well rounded of an athlete as possible. Try new and different events even if you don't think you'll excel at them, that's the only way you will discover your true potential. College swimming is more individualized than in high school, by participating in different events you are also giving your potential college coach more flexibility when he or she is assembling a team. Be coachable, and begin doing weight and cross training;  once you hit college your days of getting better simply by  swimming will be gone.

Rachel Schlatter, Quincy University (NCAA II)

Be committed to spend approximately 20 hours training at the collegiate level both in & out of the pool.  Optimize your organizational skills and maintain a disciplined schedule to keep pace with a high academic and practice routine both in high school and preparing yourself for the collegiate environment.

There is a swimming program for all levels of swimmers. Athletes need to visualize a program that fits both their academic and athletic endeavors. Preparation for college athletics is key in the recruiting process. Athletes need to understand the importance of high school & club swimming to prepare themselves for practice regiments and meet scheduling that is involved in collegiate swimming.

Start early in the process of filling out recruiting pages for various Universities you may be interested in. Be sure to check NCAA guidelines to make sure you qualify and answer all interested recruiting parties in a timely and honest manner.  Ensure that all steps within the recruiting process are completed in a timely and systematic manner ... don't get overlooked because your information is not in place. This includes registering with the NCAA eligibility center and keeping schools up to date with  contact information changes, testing scores, transcripts, and decisions made. Remember to check junk mail folders so you don't miss correspondences from potential coaches and admissions counselors.

Most importantly, the potential student-athlete is being recruited, not the parent.  Communication and contact should be athlete motivated with parents or guardians available to provide guidance and assistance. Families are typically welcome on visits but the potential student- athlete must determine themselves whether they would fit within the program and must make their own decision in choosing the best college for them.

** Steps to College: A Quick Overview of the Recruiting Timeline **
Senior year HS

* Narrow your list to 3 to 5 schools, stay in contact with coaches on a weekly basis.

*  Ask coaches for the timeline they will make offers.

 * Quickly & politely let schools know if you're no longer interested

* Contact players on your short list of schools, get their direct feedback on the school and program.

 * Take official visits to schools on your short list, meet coaches and players.

* Complete FAFSA form, get college applications in early and  apply to all schools on your short list.

* Keep your grades up - avoid Senior Slump!

* Character is key, make good choices every day. Who are you when no one is looking?

*
Post nothing on social media you may later regret. Don't let a 100 character tweet cost you a $100,000 scholarship!.

 * Receive,  consider and respond to all written offers from schools

* Make the decision ... make sure it's your decision!

Junior year HS

* Continue to research schools but  narrow your list to 10 to 15 schools.

* Keep in contact with coaches often , let them know of your continued interest and also if you're no longer interested.

* Continue to send videos & grades  to schools you are interested in.  Be your own advocate & keep your name out there!

* Ask coaches where you stand on their recruiting list and their timeline.

* Take SAT/ACT Tests

* Look to attend Showcase games and tournaments and let coaches know  your schedule.

* Continue to play at the highest level of club/HS team you can. Get feedback on where you can improve skills.

* Make unofficial visits to schools you're interested in.

* Take AP courses, challenge yourself academically!

Sophomore year HS

* Register with NCAA & NAIA eligibility Centers, complete  recruiting questionnaires for all schools on your list.

*
Begin compiling highlight & game videos, consider setting up a channel within YouTube

* Consider working with a speech coach to develop and improve communications skills - make a good first impression when you  talk to coaches.

* Begin making phone calls to coaches, let them know your game / meet / match schedule  - stay on their  radars!

 *
Take SAT / ACT practice tests and/or test prep courses, keep your grades up!

* Pick a good attitude and show it. Recognize that nothing is owed to you just because you're a good athlete.
Freshman year HS

* Continue your research  & compile an initial  list of 20 to 30 schools  you're interested in.  Rank schools based on the attributes that are most important to you

*Begin writing coaches of schools you're interested in, get on their radar and get your name out there!

 * Play at the highest level of club/HS team you can. Ask your coaches where  you need improvement and set goals.

* Look for College camps and clinics to attend.

 * Good grades are critical ALL 4 years of HS - hit the ground running freshman year!

 * Consider working with a personal trainer to improve speed, strength and overall athleticism.

8th Grade

 * Research & start a list of colleges you're interested in.  Aim to begin writing college coaches  freshman year of HS.

* Work on study and time   management skills,  important to get good grades beginning Freshman year of HS.

* Character matters, make good choices … every day. Learn to be very careful of what you put on social media.

 * Play at the highest level of club team you can.  Ask your coach what you need to do athletically to compete well at the HS level.

This is a quick overview of the recruiting timeline. Each sport and division have differing timetables but this provides a basic idea of the process. There are some constants that apply to all athletes in all sports: Start the process early,  thoroughly research your schools, take care of your grades,  advocate for but be honest about yourself, be proactive and be responsive. For more info see our page on recruiting process do's and don'ts.

(1) Varsity Rosters may include junior varsity, redshirt, reserve and/or practice squad players and do not reflect club or intramural team participants.

(2) Average Athletic Scholarship is the average amount of athletically related student aid per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the specific school. Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this.

(3)  SAT Math Average:  For each school this represents the range where the middle half of the admitted students scored, so 1/4 scored below the lower end (25th percentile) and 1/4 scored above the upper end (75th percentile).
