Softball is an equivalency sport for NCAA scholarship purposes, so partial scholarships can  be awarded to meet the limit per school. For example, an NCAA Division I school can award 18 softball players each a 2/3 scholarship and still meet the  limit of 12 per school.  See our page on scholarship limits for more information. All varsity intercollegiate softball programs in the US are women's teams.

* Average Athletic Scholarship is the average award per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the specific school. Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this.

% receiving FA reported in the tables below is the percentage of ALL undergrads (athletes & non-athletes) who received financial assistance directly from the school (i.e. scholarships & grants). Avr School FA Award is the average amount of the award received by those students who received financial assistance directly from the school.

SAT & ACT percentiles: The tables below report the mid-range for SAT Math and ACT Composite scores of the school's entering class. 50% of incoming students scored within the range reported, 25% scored at or below the low end of the range (25th percentile) and 25% scored at or above the high end of the range (75th percentile).

Weekly Time Commitment for NCAA Softball Players:
  Athletic Academic Total Hours  2018
Average Weekly Hours (In-Season)  Hours Hours per Week
NCAA I  Softball 39 39 78
NCAA II Softball 34 39 73
NCAA III Softball 27 44 71
Average 33 41 74

If you want to play college Softball expect the athletic commitment to require nearly as much time as the academic work load - basically 2 full-time jobs! And contrary to popular belief, Division III softball requires the same commitment of weekly hours as Division I. Developing efficient time management skills in high school is key to becoming  a successful student-athlete in college.

Odds of a High School Softball player making an NCAA I roster by State
374,752 girls played on US High School baseball teams during the 2017-18 season while only 5,860 US players who participated on High School teams were listed on NCAA I rosters. So the overall likelihood of a US high school Softball player making a D1 roster is less than 2% or odds of 63:1

The odds vary significantly depending on where you compete in High School. California not only produces the most D1 softball players in total (1 out of every 5) it also ranks first in the relative percentage of high school players competing on NCAA I teams .  Here is the summary of our 2018 analysis:

The reason I had my kid start a college recruiting profile.

2018 Profile Summary:

CASEY O'ROURKE
Class of 2022
Saint *** School
Washington, DC

GPA: 3.1 / 4.0

Height: 6'3"
Weight: 170
Age: 15

Position: Point Guard

Points / Game: 19
Free Throw %: 78
Field Goal %: 47

I had my son Casey start a recruiting profile in 9th grade to help motivate him to get better grades.

He's like thousands of 15 year old basketball players around the county: loves to play the game, plays on multiple teams and already has his eyes set on possibly playing in college. But like many kids his age he'll intently work on developing skills in a sport, but focusing on class work is well ... another matter.

When Casey started 9th grade he set up a  free profile with NCSA. He loves entering his game stats, videos and other athletic information, but it also became immediately clear to him that his grade point average will be just as major of a factor in his prospects of playing college basketball as his points per game average.

I don't know if my son will actually end up playing in college. He might lose interest in the sport, get injured or simply not have the skill set to play at the collegiate level.  But if part of his high school experience includes a focus on achieving good grades in the hopes of maybe playing in college, then maintaining a recruiting profile is a valuable tool at this stage of his schooling.

Whether you are an 8th grade softball player or a 10th grade swimmer, starting a recruiting profile is an easy, free & effective way to help you focus on what college coaches are looking for in a student athlete. Full disclosure:
NCSA is one of our sponsors, there are several other reputable sites that also offer recruiting profiles free of cost. The ideal time to create a college recruiting profile is when a student athlete is in 8th, 9th or 10th grade.
