(1) Varsity Rosters may include junior varsity, redshirt, reserve and/or practice squad players and do not reflect club or intramural team participants.

*Softball is an equivalency sport for NCAA scholarship purposes, so partial scholarships can  be awarded to meet the limit per school. For example, an NCAA Division I school can award 18 softball players each a 2/3 scholarship and still meet the  limit of 12 per school. See our page on scholarship limits for more information.

(
2) Average Athletic Scholarship is the average award per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the specific school. Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this.

New Data!  2016 Athletic Scholarship Averages for NCAA I Softball teams
Here are the results of our 2016 survey of NCAA I schools that sponsored varsity softball teams during their 2015-16 fiscal years. The results reflect the average number of athletic scholarships and average award by responding  schools, as well as the low and high range for the number and average award per team:
2016 NCAA baseball
NCAA I Softball Teams Average Low  High
Scholarships Awarded per team 19 13 24
Average Scholarship per team  $     20,715  $         7,281  $       47,624

The number of scholarships awarded is per team, so for 4 year schools typically only 25% or so will be available for the incoming (i.e. freshmen) class. NCAA I schools that do not award athletic scholarships (Ivy League, etc.) are not included in these results.

Coach's Corner  New Feature!
We asked a few coaches from around the country to take time from their busy schedules and provide some brief input for high school & middle school athletes hoping to play college softball. Here are some thoughts we believe are particularly helpful:

Brenda Holaday, Washburn University (NCAA II)

Become an athlete, not just a softball player. Spend time in the weight room, condition, build your skill set against good competition. Market yourself by sending emails with profiles and video attached for college coaches to view. Be open to various possibilities. Don’t get your mind set on one university or one level. Every program has positions and needs and they are trying to find players to fit those needs.

Don't put all your marbles in one box during high school. Student-athletes have four years to be involved in many things, including multiple sports. Even if you are better in one sport than another, the value and memories that come from participating in multiple sports overwhelmingly outweighs the advantage of spending all of your time on just one. College coaches are much more interested in the versatile athlete. They want athletes who put themselves in a competitive situation in various sports rather than the athlete who spends all of her time in a hitting cage.

There is a limited number of scholarships and a limited amount of money. Most athletes do not receive full rides and many play for little or no money. Even in D1 programs, many  players receive only a limited amount of money. It is so important that the student-athlete is a strong student as well as a talented athlete. Academic money earned in addition to any  softball money can go a long ways towards paying for your education.

All  athletes must understand that they have to keep getting better, even after they have signed a scholarship offer. Coaches are always trying to find players better than the ones they have,  so the competition is tough and improvement throughout high school and college is essential if you  are going to be rewarded with playing time.

Chad Kerr, Lincoln University (NCAA II)

Biggest mistake is just playing and hoping someone will “discover” you.  It happens but usually we are at tournaments to watch players who have contacted us. Begin contacting coaches early (i.e. freshman year) in high school.  Choose 3-4 schools at different levels that have the academic major you want (don’t choose a school just for Softball) and start emailing coaches to build a relationship.

Send emails personally and do your research to make sure you have names and schools correct.  Don’t send an email to Coach Jones (and was meant for Coach Smith) and congratulate them on a terrific season (when they went 5-45) and that you’d love to learn more about their Nursing Program (when they don’t have one).

Just state your interest in the school, send your upcoming schedules (HS and Travel) and let them know  you'd like them to come watch you play. Send  a simple video, don’t spend big bucks on this and we really don’t need music. Just show us your skills at your position and hitting. Don’t be disappointed if a coach doesn’t reply, rules vary by different levels and I myself at D2 cannot contact a player until June 15 prior to their Junior year in HS.

Attend camps at the schools you have an interest in, it's a great way to meet the coach and team, see the school and facilities, and get individual attention.    Best steps are to be honest, be personable, attend camps, and don’t forget to let us know about something wonderful in the classroom (i.e. Honor Roll) as we care about that too, not just Softball.

Too many players assume they will get a “full ride” scholarship and this just isn’t the case.  NCAA II schools are allowed 7.2 scholarships and most don’t even award that. Since we carry anywhere from 15-20 players on a roster the math tells you a coach needs to divide any available scholarships amongst the entire team.  Grades are huge as this will determine how much academic monies you will receive along with Softball dollars and how we can close the gap on covering your costs of education. Don’t get hung up on D1 or nothing, lots of great schools/programs out there at other levels!

Jackie Manrique, Trinity Christian College (NAIA)

The best step a student athlete can take in being recruiting is maintaining  good grades and attending college camps. If you are interested in a college program, find out if they are hosting a camp. It’s a great way to meet the coach and the team while visiting campus.

The recruiting process can be tiring and stressful, but it can also be  very rewarding. The most common mistake I see is not doing the required research. Make sure you are researching the college or university you are in contact with! There is nothing worse than reading an email or talking to a recruit who clearly has not spent time doing their research.

The biggest misconception that families have about playing softball in college is typically what is the best fit for their child. It’s really important to set realistic, and achievable standards for kids when they are looking at college athletic programs. Watching different college teams at different levels and comparing yourself to the teams skills is a good start. If there is a large gap in skill level, that is important to recognize.

Sara Fleming, Randolph College (NCAA III)

Good character and positive attitude are paramount for what we are looking for in a player.  When we scout prospects at games and tournaments, we look closely at a player's attitude and mental game. Here are some warning signs we often see that will quickly turn off a college coach's interest in you:  bad attitude, rudeness to parents and coaches, inability to handle and bounce back from failure or adversity well.

Don't invite us to come watch you play and let the first things we see be: walking on the field, going through the motions or being concerned with yourself more than your teammates.

I think one of the biggest misconceptions parents have about college softball is that their kids are going to come in and play immediately. The opposite is most likely true. Most schools already have a solid team and they are looking to build on it with great teammates who are passionate about the sport.

When choosing a school, don't put all your eggs in one basket. There are many great schools out there besides D1. Keep your options open and find at least 3 or 4 schools that will be best for you in all aspects, not just from a softball standpoint. When you begin contacting coaches, make sure it's an individualized letter that conveys sincere interest. Coaches can immediately spot a mass mailing just as well as you can. Also, include a skills video (It can be homemade!), so coaches can preview your skills!

While parental support is important, we want to hear from the athlete. Let the kids do the communicating; it's a great opportunity for them to learn how to deal with and act like adults. The player must build a relationship with the potential coach. I want the athlete - not the parents - to convince me that they are right for our school.

Get to know each school's expectations about grades.  At Randolph Softball, we prefer students with a 3.5 GPA or higher, and anything below 3.0 is going to be very difficult to get admitted.  We look for higher high school GPAs because there is an increased athletic and academic workload in college, and the adjustment period for first years can be especially difficult. We want you to be successful academically AND athletically.

Get on coaches' radars early in high school by beginning to build relationships. E-mail coaches at schools you're interested in, and let them know your schedule. Attend skills camps when possible, so you can have more 1:1 time with actual college coaches. High school softball is great, but you're more likely to get noticed by playing with a club team, as more coaches attend club tournaments and games.

This is a quick overview of the recruiting timeline. Timetables may vary somewhat by sport, division, school and gender, but this provides a basic idea of the process. There are some constants that apply to all athletes in all sports: Start the process early,  thoroughly research your schools, take care of your grades,  advocate for but be honest about yourself, be proactive and be responsive. For more information see our page on recruiting process do's and don'ts.

If you can answer "yes" to these 3 questions, there is a roster spot out there for you:

1.  Will I be a positive representative of the team, program and school?  ... Good Character
2.  Will I be a positive addition to the roster and make the team better? ... Athletic Skill
3.  Will I be able to succeed both athletically and academically at this school? ... Solid Academics
