Soccer is an equivalency sport for NCAA limits, so partial scholarships can be awarded as long as the combined equivalent awards do not exceed the limit. For example, an NCAA Division I school can award 28 female soccer players each a 1/2 equivalent scholarship and still meet the limit of 14 per team.  For more information see our page on scholarship limits

Do the Math!
NCAA Division I men's Soccer teams have an average roster size of 29 players but only a maximum of 9.9 athletic scholarships to award per team. This means the average award covers only about 1/3 of a typical athlete's annual college costs - and this assumes the sport is fully funded at the sponsoring school.

* Average Athletic Scholarship is the average award per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the specific school. Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this.

% Receiving FA reported in the tables below is the percentage of ALL undergrads (athletes & non-athletes)  who received financial assistance directly from the school (i.e. scholarships & grants). Avr School FA Award is the average amount of the award received by those students who received financial assistance directly from the school.

SAT & ACT percentiles: The tables below report the mid-range for SAT Math and ACT composite scores of the school’s entering students: 50% of incoming students scored within the range reported, 25% scored at or below the low end of the range (25th percentile) and 25% scored at or above the high end of the range (75th percentile).

Weekly Time Commitment for NCAA Soccer Players:
  Athletic  Academic Total Hours
Average Weekly Hours (In-Season) Hours * Hours * per Week :
NCAA I - Men 29 37 66
NCAA I - Women 31 40 71
NCAA II - Men 27 37 64
NCAA II - Women 28 42 70
NCAA III - Men 27 41 68
NCAA III - Women 27 45 72
Average 28 41 69

* If you want to play college soccer expect the athletic commitment to require nearly as much time as the academic work load - basically 2 full-time jobs!
And contrary to popular belief, Division III soccer requires virtually the same commitment of weekly hours as Division I.  Developing efficient time management skills in high school is key to becoming  a successful student athlete in college.

Odds of a High School Soccer player making an NCAA I roster by State:
493,631 boys played on US High School soccer teams during the 2018-19  season, while only 4,991 players  who participated on US high school teams were listed on NCAA I rosters. So the overall likelihood of a male US High school soccer player making a D1 roster is only 1% or odds of  99:1 nationwide. 410,526 girls played on US High School teams during the 2018-19 season, while 8,849 US players were listed on D1 rosters, resulting in a overall odds  46:1 of a US high school female player making a D1 roster.

Odds of playing D1 soccer are significantly less for US male players than female players for two primary reasons: There are almost 40% fewer Men's NCAA I soccer teams (205) than Women's teams (336) and there is a significantly higher percentage of foreign student athletes playing Men's D1 soccer (16%) than playing on Women's teams (6%). US male soccer players have much better odds (over twice) of making an NCAA III roster over a D1 roster as there are over double the teams (421 versus 205) and D3 rosters are composed of a higher average percentage of US players (97% versus 84%).

The odds vary significantly depending on where you compete in High School. The odds of playing D1 are notably higher for players from the Mid-Atlantic states, but much lower for players in many other areas. The odds are especially low for states without NCAA I schools that sponsor men's and/or women's soccer:

The reason I had my kid start a college recruiting profile.

2018  Profile Summary:

CASEY O'ROURKE
Class of 2022
Saint *** School
Washington, DC

GPA: 3.3 / 4.0

Height: 6'3"
Weight: 170
Age: 15

Position: Point Guard

Points / Game: 19
Field Goal %: 47
Free Throw %: 78

18  I had my son Casey start a recruiting profile in 9th grade to help motivate him to get better grades.

He's like thousands of 15 year old basketball players around the county: loves to play the game, plays on multiple teams and already has his eyes set on possibly playing in college. But like many kids his age he'll intently work on developing skills in a sport, but focusing on class work is well ... another matter.

When Casey began 9th grade he set up a free profile with NCSA. He loves entering his game stats, videos and other athletic information, but it also became immediately clear to him that his grade point average will be just as major of a factor in his prospects of playing college basketball as his points per game average.

I don't know if my son will actually end up playing in college. He might lose interest in the sport, get injured or simply not have the skill set to play at the collegiate level.  But if part of his high school experience includes a focus on achieving good grades in the hopes of maybe playing in college, then maintaining a recruiting profile is a valuable tool at this stage of his schooling.

Whether you are an 8th grade soccer player or a 10th grade swimmer, starting a recruiting profile is an easy, free & effective way to help you focus on what college coaches are looking for in a student athlete. Full disclosure: NCSA is one of our site sponsors, there are several other reputable sites that also offer college recruiting profiles free of cost. The ideal time to create a college recruiting profile is when a student athlete is in 8th, 9th or 10th grade.
