** Do the Math!   NCAA Division I men's Soccer teams have an average roster size of 29 players but only a maximum of 9.9 athletic scholarships to award per team. This means the average award covers only about 34% of a typical athlete's annual college costs - and this assumes the sport is fully funded at the sponsoring school. Soccer is an equivalency sport for NCAA limits, so partial scholarships can be awarded as long as the combined equivalent awards do not exceed the limit. For example, an NCAA Division I school can award 28 female soccer players each a 1/2 equivalent scholarship and still meet the limit of 14 per team.  For more information see our page on scholarship limits.

(2) Average Athletic Scholarship is the average amount of athletically related student aid per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the specific school. Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this.

New Data!
2016 Athletic Scholarship Averages for NCAA Division I Soccer teams
The following are the results of our 2016 survey of NCAA I schools that sponsored varsity soccer teams during their 2015-16 fiscal years. The results reflect the average number of athletic scholarships and the average dollar amount awarded by responding  schools, as well as the low and high range for the number and average dollar award per team:

Men's NCAA I Soccer Teams Average Low  High
Scholarships awarded per team 21 12 30
Average Scholarship per team  $      15,008  $          5,809  $        31,062
Women's NCAA I Soccer Teams Average Low  High
Scholarships awarded per team 25 17 33
Average Scholarship per team  $     17,766  $        6,220  $        31,363

Number of scholarships awarded is per team, so for 4 year schools typically only 25% or so will be available for the incoming (i.e. freshmen) class. Data includes responding schools only, programs that do not award athletic scholarships (Ivy League, etc.) are not included in results.

Coach's Corner New Feature!
We asked a few coaches from around the country to take time from their busy schedules and provide some brief input for high school & middle school athletes hoping to play college soccer. Here are some of their thoughts:

Bill Kelly, Bard College (NCAA III)

Play soccer at the highest level possible for you. Find and play for the best club you can. Playing with the best players possible and playing for good coaches will help you develop as a player. Another thing I always encourage is for young players to watch top level soccer on TV to learn more about the game. It's amazing how much one can learn by listening to the game commentators! Educate yourself, know your stuff, and become a true student of the game.

A lot of good student-athletes are not proactive enough in the recruiting process. Many simply don't know how to get recruited, and then wait too long before exploring schools and contacting coaches themselves. It's okay to send a coach an email explaining that you are interested in the school and the soccer program, and that you feel you could be a fit. It helps to supply a link to a highlights video as well as match video, and it's also important to share your showcase and tournament schedule information. Send a phone number and an email address, and ask the coach to contact you.

But don't send a mass email out to coaches--you should, in a thoughtful email, explain why you feel you'd be a fit for that particular school and that soccer program. Be specific as it shows genuine interest.

  College soccer 2017

Keri Sanchez, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (NCAA III)

It is important to be a quality student along with being a good soccer player.  There are many players who want to play in college.  Coaches prefer players that they can trust to attend class, do their work, and stay academically eligible.
Some common mistakes made in high school are not reaching out to coaches early enough, not staying in touch with coaches on a regular basis, not figuring out the best fit academically and athletically , and not taking care of business in the classroom all 4 years of high school. Many colleges will look at all 4 years of your transcript so freshman year does matter.

Let coaches know you are serious about their school and that you are someone that can help their soccer program.  Make sure you have seen the team play to know the level is right for you- most teams stream games on line, or go watch in person.  If you can attend an ID clinic or camp, that can help let you know if you are the right fit athletically.

The best steps an athlete can take to enhance their chances of playing in college are to do well in high
school academically, to compete on the highest level of club team you can (based on your level of play and affordability), and to be seen by playing in club tournaments where college coaches attend and/or attend college ID camps/clinics.

** Steps to College: A Quick Overview of the Recruiting Timeline **
Senior year HS

* Narrow your list to 3 to 5 schools, stay in contact with coaches on a weekly basis. Ask coaches for the timeline  they will make offers.

 * Quickly let coaches know if you're no longer interested

* Contact players on your short list of schools, get their direct feedback on the school and program.

 * Take official visits to schools on your short list, meet coaches and players.

* Complete FAFSA form, get college applications in early and apply to all schools on your short list.

* Keep your grades up - avoid Senior Slump!

* Character is key, make good choices every day. Who are you when no one is looking?

*
Post nothing on Social Media you may later regret.
Don't let a 100 character tweet cost you a $100,000 scholarship!

 * Receive,  consider and respond to all written offers from schools

* Make a decision - make sure it's your decision!

Junior year HS

* Continue to research schools but  narrow your list to 10 to 15 schools.

* Keep in contact with coaches often , let them know of your continued interest and also if you're no longer interested.

* Continue to send videos & grades  to schools you are interested in.  Be your own advocate & keep your name out there!

* Ask coaches where you stand on their recruiting list and their timeline.

* Take SAT/ACT Tests

* Look to attend Showcase games, meets and tournaments. Always let coaches know  your schedule.

* Begin making phone calls to coaches, let them know your game / meet / match schedule  - stay on their  radars!

 *
Take SAT / ACT practice tests and/or test prep courses, keep your grades up!

* Pick a good attitude and show it. Recognize that nothing is owed to you just because you're a good athlete.
Freshman year HS

* Continue your research  & compile an initial  list of 20 to 30 schools  you're interested in.  Rank schools based on the attributes that are most important to you.

*Begin writing coaches of schools you're interested in, get on their radar and get your name out there!

 * Play at the highest level of club/HS team you can. Ask your coaches where  you need improvement and set goals.

* Good grades are critical ALL 4 years of HS - hit the ground running freshman year!

 * Consider working with a personal trainer to improve speed, strength and overall athleticism.

8th Grade

 * Research & start a list of colleges you're interested in.  Aim to begin writing college coaches your freshman year of HS.

* Work on study and time   management skills,  important to get good grades beginning Freshman year of HS.

* Character matters, make good choices … every day. Learn to be very careful of what you put on social media.

 * Play at the highest level of club team you can.  Ask your coach what you need to do athletically to compete well at the HS level.

This is a quick overview of the recruiting timeline. Timetables may differ somewhat by sport, division, school and gender, but this provides a basic idea of the process. There are some constants that apply to all athletes in all sports: Start the process early,  thoroughly research your schools, take care of your grades,  advocate for but be honest about yourself, be proactive and be responsive. For more information see our page on recruiting process do's and don'ts.

If you can answer "yes" to these 3 questions, there is a roster spot out there for you:

1.  Will I be a positive representative of the team, program and school?  ... Good Character
2.  Will I be a positive addition to the roster and make the team better? ... Athletic Skill
3.  Will I be able to succeed both athletically and academically at this school? ... Solid Academics
