Field Hockey is an equivalency sport for NCAA scholarship purposes, so partial scholarships can  be awarded to meet the limit per school.  For example, an NCAA Division I school can award 18 Field Hockey players each a 2/3 scholarship and still meet the  limit of 12 per school.  See our page on scholarship limits for more information.

* Average Athletic Scholarship is the average amount of athletically related student aid per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the specific school. Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this.

% Receiving FA reported in the tables below is the percentage of ALL undergrads (athletes & non-athletes) who received financial assistance directly from the school (i.e. scholarships & grants). Avr School FA Award is the average amount of the award received by those students who received financial assistance directly from the school.

SAT & ACT percentiles: The tables below report the mid-range for SAT Math and ACT Composite scores of the school's entering class. 50% of incoming students scored within the range reported, 25% scored at or below the low end of the range (25th percentile) and 25% scored at or above the high end of the range (75th percentile).

Weekly Time Commitment for NCAA Field Hockey Players:
  Athletic Academic Total Hours 2018
Average Weekly Hours (In-Season)  Hours Hours per Week
NCAA I  Field Hockey 34 44 78
NCAA II Field Hockey 33 42 75
NCAA III Field Hockey 27 44 71
Average 32 43 75

If you want to play College Field Hockey expect the athletic commitment to require nearly as much time as the academic work load - basically 2 full-time jobs!
And contrary to popular belief, Division III field hockey requires almost the same commitment of weekly hours as Division I.  Developing efficient time management skills in high school is key to becoming  a successful student-athlete in college.  Source: NCAA Goals Study

2018

The reason I had my kid start a college recruiting profile.

2018 Profile Summary:

CASEY O'ROURKE
Class of 2022
Saint *** School
Washington, DC

GPA: 3.3 / 4.0

Height: 6'3"
Weight: 170
Age: 15

Position: Point Guard

Points / Game: 19
Free Throw %: 78
Field Goal %: 47

2018 I had my son Casey start a recruiting profile in 9th grade to help motivate him to get better grades.

He's like thousands of 15 year old basketball players around the county: loves to play the game, plays on multiple teams and already has his eyes on possibly playing in college. But like many kids his age he'll intently work on developing skills in a sport, but focusing on class work is well ... another matter.

When Casey began 9th grade he started a free profile with NCSA. He loves entering his game stats, videos and other athletic information, but it also became immediately clear to him that his grade point average will be just as major of a factor in his prospects of playing college basketball as his points per game average.

I don't know if my son will actually end up playing in college. He might lose interest in the sport, get injured or simply not have the skill set to play at the collegiate level.  But if part of his high school experience includes a focus on achieving good grades in the hopes of maybe playing in college, then maintaining a recruiting profile is a valuable tool at this stage of his schooling.

Whether you are an 8th grade field hockey player or a 10th grade swimmer, starting a recruiting profile is an easy, free & effective way to help you focus on what college coaches are looking for in a student athlete. Full disclosure: NCSA is one of our site sponsors, there are several other reputable sites that also offer recruiting profiles free of cost. The ideal time to create a college recruiting profile is when a student athlete is in 8th, 9th or 10th grade.

Coach's Corner

We asked a few coaches from around the country to take time from their busy schedules and provide some brief input for high school & middle school athletes hoping to compete in College. Here are some thoughts we believe are particularly helpful:

Shelly Behrens, Millersville University (NCAA II)   II)

Do your own research on schools and programs, don't rely on word of mouth from other HS / club families  or  sketchy internet sources ... always make sure the information you have is accurate and objective.

Contact coaches directly, be sure you have their name and school correct - cutting and pasting mishaps happen! Get in front of the coach and their staff on campus. Don't expect your chances to improve through any company that promotes this - you can e-mail a coach just as well as they can!

Commitment is commitment and you will need this whether you end up playing Division 1, 2 or 3.

Eileen O'Reilly, Montclair State University (NCAA III)

When looking at schools always keep coaches updated and stay on their radar. Recruiting is a continuous process and you must be proactive, coaches and schools should not have to continually reach out to you. Send a highlight reel with game footage and keep coaches updated about your upcoming events, bottom line is schools must be able to evaluate your play. Reach out to coaches before you schedule campus visits - we want to meet you!

Merit awards based on academics are completely separate from the athletic department, so don't ask or press coaches on this subject ... it's an NCAA violation!

Be very careful with your social media. When you are on a college team you are considered a representative of both the school and the field hockey program and anything you write will be viewed that way by your coaches and school officials. You will be best served by assuming that anything you post on social media will eventually make its way public.

Be prepared to make a significant time commitment for college field hockey. During the fall season expect to play 6 days a week with 2 games and 4 practices a week. During spring we have a 5 week season, 3 days per week including strength and conditioning coaching. Strive to develop good time management skills while you're still in high school!
