These are the results of our survey of NCAA I schools that sponsored varsity Field Hockey teams during their 2016 fiscal years. Number of scholarships awarded is per team, so for 4 year schools typically only 25% or so will be available for the incoming (i.e. freshmen) class. NCAA I schools that do not award athletic scholarships (Ivy League, etc.) are not included in these results.

Field Hockey is an equivalency sport for NCAA scholarship purposes, so partial scholarships can  be awarded to meet the limit per school.  For example, an NCAA Division I school can award 18 Field Hockey players each a 2/3 scholarship and still meet the  limit of 12 per school.
See our page on scholarship limits for more information.

* Average Athletic Scholarship is the average amount of athletically related student aid per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the specific school. Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this.

Coach's Corner

We asked a few coaches from around the country to take time from their busy schedules and provide some brief input for high school & middle school athletes hoping to compete in College. Here are some thoughts we believe are particularly helpful:

Shelly Behrens, Millersville University (NCAA II)   II)

Do your own research on schools and programs, don't rely on word of mouth from other HS / club families  or  sketchy internet sources ... always make sure the information you have is accurate and objective.

Contact coaches directly, be sure you have their name and school correct - cutting and pasting mishaps happen! Get in front of the coach and their staff on campus. Don't expect your chances to improve through any company that promotes this - you can e-mail a coach just as well as they can!

Commitment is commitment and you will need this whether you end up playing Division 1, 2 or 3.

Eileen O'Reilly, Montclair State University (NCAA III)

When looking at schools always keep coaches updated and stay on their radar. Recruiting is a continuous process and you must be proactive, coaches and schools should not have to continually reach out to you. Send a highlight reel with game footage and keep coaches updated about your upcoming events, bottom line is schools must be able to evaluate your play. Reach out to coaches before you schedule campus visits - we want to meet you!

Merit awards based on academics are completely separate from the athletic department, so don't ask or press coaches on this subject ... it's an NCAA violation!

Be very careful with your social media. When you are on a college team you are considered a representative of both the school and the field hockey program and anything you write will be viewed that way by your coaches and school officials. You will be best served by assuming that anything you post on social media will eventually make its way public.

Be prepared to make a significant time commitment for college field hockey. During the fall season expect to play 6 days a week with 2 games and 4 practices a week. During spring we have a 5 week season, 3 days per week including strength and conditioning coaching. Strive to develop good time management skills while you're still in high school!

** Steps to College: A Quick Overview of the Recruiting Timeline **

              Senior year HS

               * Narrow your list of schools to 3 to 5, stay in contact with coaches on a weekly basis.

* Ask coaches for the timeline in which they will make offers.

* Quickly let schools know if you're no longer interested

* Contact players on your short list of schools, get their direct feedback on the school and program.

* Take official visits to schools on your short list, meet coaches and players.

* Complete FAFSA form, get college applications in early and apply to all schools on your short list.

* Keep your grades up - avoid Senior Slump!

* Character is key, make good choices every day. Who are you when no one is looking?

  * Post nothing on social media you may later regret. Don't let a 100 character tweet cost you a $100,000 scholarship!

* Receive,  consider and respond to all written offers from schools

* Make the decision - make sure it's your decision!
          Junior year HS

          * Continue to research schools but  narrow your list to 10 to 15 schools.

* Keep in contact with coaches often , let them know of your continued interest and also if you're no longer interested.

* Continue to send videos & grades  to schools you are interested in.  Be your own advocate & keep your name out there!

* Ask coaches where you stand on their recruiting list and their timeline.

* Take SAT/ACT Tests.

* Look to attend Showcase games and tournaments and let coaches know  your schedule.

* Continue to play at the highest level of club/HS team you can. Get feedback on where you can improve skills.

* Make unofficial visits to schools you're interested in.

* Take AP courses, challenge yourself academically!

      Sophomore year HS

      * Register with NCAA & NAIA eligibility Centers, complete  recruiting questionnaires for all schools on your list.

* Begin compiling highlight & game videos, consider setting up a channel within YouTube.

* Continue to research and update  your list and write coaches & schools. Send videos and/or links to videos.

*  Consider working with a speech coach to develop and improve communications skills - make a good first impression when you  talk to coaches

* Begin making phone calls to coaches, let them know your game / meet / match schedule  - stay on their  radars!

* Take SAT / ACT practice tests and/or test prep courses, keep your grades up.

* Pick a good attitude and show it. Recognize that nothing is owed to you just because you're a good athlete.

  Freshman year HS

  * Continue your research  & compile an initial  list of 20 to 30 schools  you're interested in.  Rank schools based on the attributes that are most important to you

*Begin writing coaches of schools you're interested in, get on their radars and get your name out there!

* Play at the highest level of club/HS team you can. Ask your coaches where  you need improvement and set goals.

 * Look for College camps and clinics to attend.

* Good grades are critical ALL 4 years of HS - hit the ground running freshman year!

* Consider working with a personal trainer to improve speed, strength and overall athleticism.

8th Grade

* Research & start a list of colleges you're interested in.  Aim to begin writing college coaches during your freshman year of HS.

* Work on study and time   management skills,  important to get good grades beginning with Freshman year of HS!
