** Do the Math!  The average NCAA Division I baseball team has a roster of 35 players but only a maximum of 11.7 athletic scholarships available. This means the average award covers only about 1/3 of annual college costs and this assumes the sport is fully funded at the sponsoring school.  Baseball is an equivalency sport for NCAA scholarship purposes, so partial scholarships can  be awarded to meet the NCAA limit per school.  For example, an NCAA Division II school can award 27 baseball players each a 1/3 equivalent scholarship and still meet the limit of 9. For more information see our page on scholarship limits.

(
2) Average Athletic Scholarship is the average award per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the specific school. Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletic scholarships. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this.

New Data!  2016 Athletic Scholarship Averages for NCAA I Baseball teams
Here are the results of our 2016 survey of NCAA I schools that sponsored varsity baseball during their 2015-16 fiscal years. The results reflect the average number of athletic scholarships and the average award by responding  schools, as well as the low and high range for the number and average amount of awards per team:

NCAA I Baseball Teams Average Low  High
Scholarships awarded per team 26 261    414 30
Average Scholarship per team  $       13,220  $      6,298  $       25,934
Number of scholarships awarded is per team, so for 4 year schools typically only 25% or so will be available for the incoming (i.e. freshmen) class. NCAA I schools that do not award athletic scholarships (Ivy League, etc.) are not included in these results.

Coach's Corner  New Feature!
We asked a few coaches from around the country to take time from their busy schedules and provide some brief input for high school & middle school athletes hoping to play college baseball. Here are some of their thoughts:

  College baseball 2017
Greg DiCenzo, Holy Cross (NCAA I)

One's character is the most valuable component in the recruiting process. A prospective student-athlete's baseball skill set probably ranks third behind their character and academic track record. While there may be flexibility around academics and athletic ability, you must have good character ... you must be an asset to the Holy Cross community.

Once you get to high school, you are on the clock. Your grades freshman and sophomore year will be on your record when you start to look at schools in your junior year.

Kids and families get sold on programs that are not a good fit for them. Players need to know what they are looking for in a school and not leave a visit until they have all their questions answered and all the boxes checked. Make sure the school is totally transparent about what they expect from student athletes. If you are not dying to bleed purple then we might not be the right place for you and we will let you know that from the very beginning. We might lose some kids because of our transparency and honesty but that is better than losing a kid after they are already here.

We love multi-sport athletes. Only a handful of our kids were single sport athletes in high school. We have a number of players that play multiple sports at Holy Cross. Guys that play multiple sports have an athleticism that allows them to adjust and respond in a game that single sport athletes do not tend to have. If only for the break from the boredom, play more than one sport.

  2016 college baseball
Dave Barnett, Flagler College (NCAA II)

Choose 5 schools that you like and attend their camps. Get on their campuses and showcase your skills. Most coaches will be honest with athletes about their chances to play there.  Don't look at schools you know are above your skill set. Don't spend too much money on recruiting services when you can e-mail coaches directly.
One of the biggest surprises for many athletes and their families is the level of commitment it takes to play college baseball. This includes early morning strength training work-outs, and a practice schedule just about year round - fall and spring. The reality is that college baseball takes a lot of time and effort—not much time for social life.

20 Brandon Nelson, Lakeland University (NCAA III)

Get your name out there, kids are too worried about schools coming to them to get recruited.  If you're serious about playing at the next level then you will have no problem taking the time out to look up the coaching staff to each of the schools you're interested in and sending them an email.

Understand however that regardless of the division of the school this game takes commitment and sacrifice, and you have to be sure that you are willing to give both in the classroom and on the field to play at this level.

 2017 Baseball
Too many kids today are looking for scholarships and overlooking schools that would give them a legitimate chance to contribute (such as Division 3 schools).  You may only get 1 or 2 schools actually interested in you, are you going to throw away your chance at playing college baseball due to no athletic scholarship?  Trust me if you're not willing to take that opportunity, someone else will.

Ray Ricker, Post University (NCAA II)

I think the biggest surprise for most incoming freshman is just how good everyone is. The intensity and speed is at another level. Once you step on campus you must be ready to compete against guys bigger and stronger then you're used to, and you'll be expected to do more than you have been before. Practices are more intense, off season weights, study halls, and being away from home all take time to get used to.  The coaches don’t make out the lineup cards. Playing time is dictated by how hard you work  day in and day out.

Coaching is our profession and we want players  we can trust. Be mindful of a thing called “Google”,  we will look up your Twitter account and see what you're writing. If we do not like what we see you will be off the recruiting board quicker than you were put on it.

Take your academics seriously in high school, we have a limited amount of athletic scholarships and any academic money you may be eligible for can reduce the cost of your college education. One of the biggest mistakes I see is when coaches reach out to you and we hear nothing back. If you are not interested just politely tell the coach “Thank you for your interest but I am looking for a school with (e.g.) engineering and I see you don’t offer it.”

Playing for a summer baseball program that has a good track record with college coaches and playing in the right tournaments are a big plus in recruiting, but it's up to the student athlete to  stay in contact with coaches and  inform them of their game and tournament schedules. Showcase events are also a very valuable opportunity to play in front of college coaches.  But these events can eat up a lot of time and money, confirm beforehand that coaches from the schools you're interested in attending will actually be there.

One of the best things a player can do is to see a college practice in the fall. See the game speed, size of the players, and how the practices are organized. These are all key things you should know while you are researching schools and before you break the bank to go to every showcase under the sun.

** Steps to College: A Quick Overview of the Recruiting Timeline **
Senior year HS

* Narrow your list to 3 to 5 schools, stay in contact with coaches on a weekly basis.

 * Receive,  consider and respond to all written offers from schools

* Make the decision ... make sure it's your decision!

Junior year HS

 *
Take SAT / ACT practice tests and/or test prep courses, keep your grades up!

* Pick a good attitude and show it. Recognize that nothing is owed to you just because you're a good athlete.
Freshman year HS

* Continue your research  & compile an initial  list of 20 to 30 schools  you're interested in.  Rank schools based on the attributes that are most important to you

8th Grade

 * Research & start a list of colleges you're interested in.  Aim to begin writing college coaches  freshman year of HS.

* Work on study and time   management skills,  important to get good grades beginning Freshman year of HS.

* Character matters, make good choices … every day. Learn to be very careful of what you put on social media.

 * Play at the highest level of club team you can.  Ask your coach what you need to do athletically to compete well at the HS level.

This is a quick overview of the recruiting timeline. Timetables may differ somewhat by sport, division, school and gender, but this provides a basic idea of the process. There are some constants that apply to all athletes in all sports: Start the process early,  thoroughly research your schools, take care of your grades,  advocate for but be honest about yourself, be proactive and be responsive. For more information see our page on recruiting process do's and don'ts.

If you can answer "yes" to these 3 questions, there is a roster spot out there for you:

1.  Will I be a positive representative of the team, program and school?  ... Good Character
2.  Will I be a positive addition to the roster and make the team better? ... Athletic Skill
3.  Will I be able to succeed both athletically and academically at this school? ... Solid Academics
