US Colleges with varsity athletic programs collectively awarded just under $ 4.1 billion in athletic scholarships during their 2018-19 fiscal years. NCAA Division I Schools accounted for approximately 2/3 of every athletic scholarship dollar awarded. NCAA III schools have the most participating athletes but do not award scholarships based on athletic ability. However NCAA III as well as all other schools grant forms of non-athletically based financial assistance that all students - including student athletes - may qualify for.

*  Average Athletic Scholarship is the average per athlete for ALL varsity sports sponsored by the school during the fiscal 2019 school year.  Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletically based student aid.  See the tables below for average athletic scholarships and other financial assistance awarded on a school by school basis.

Schools with the highest average athletic scholarships - 2019
Miami topped our 2019 list of schools with the highest average athletic scholarship per athlete. A number of factors affect the averages with annual tuition typically  being the biggest influence. But the mix of sports sponsored and the percentage of in state versus out of state athletes also have an impact on the resulting averages. The Service Academies (Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard) provide full rides to all enrollees (athletes and non-athletes).

* Data includes responding schools only, programs that do not award athletic scholarships (Ivy League, etc.) are not included in these results. Number of scholarships awarded is per team, so for 4 year schools typically only 25% or so will be available for  incoming (i.e. freshmen & JC transfers) student athletes.

Average Athletic Scholarship & Other Financial Assistance by School
The tables below report the average athletic scholarship and other financial assistance awarded on a school by school basis. Definitions are as follows:

* Average Athletic Scholarship is the average per varsity athlete for all varsity sports sponsored by the school during the 2018-19 school year.  Some athletes receive full awards, some receive partial and many receive none. Additionally some sports within a school may be fully funded, some partially and some sports provide no athletically based student aid. Private schools generally have higher tuition than public schools and the average award will reflect this. These averages are strictly for athletically related student aid and do not include academically based and other financial assistance that all students - including athletes - may qualify for.

% Receiving School FA reported in the tables below is the percentage of ALL undergrads (athletes & non-athletes)  who received financial assistance directly from the school (i.e. scholarships & grants). Avr School FA Award is the average amount of the award received by those students who received financial assistance directly from the school.

How to Read this table: Using Auburn University (below) as an example:  62% of all Auburn undergraduate students (athletes & non-athletes) received some form (athletically and non-athletically related) of financial assistance (FA) directly from the school during 2019, the average annual award to those 62% was $ 8,385. What this also indicates is that 38% of Auburn undergraduates received no financial assistance directly from the school. This figure does not include non-institutional (i.e. federal or state) grants. Student loans are not financial assistance and are not included.
